China started off as one of the earliest civilizations in the world. Over the centuries, however, the civilization was surpassed by the modernization and transformation of the Western world and the Chinese were forced to submit to the colonial powers and they were subjected to a period of humiliation. This resulted in the rise of many rebellions and revolutionary groups which introduced many radical changes to the politics of China to eventually overthrow the ineffective imperial rule of the Manchu Government.
The post-imperial period saw the rise of two parties which had a particularly strong hold of power in China, and one of them was the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). With their leader, Mao Zedong, the CCP have introduced many reforms which revolutionized the social, economical and political aspects of China to become the uprising superpower it is today. Among these reforms are the:
- Three-Anti/Five-Anti Campaigns
- Hundred Flowers Campaign
- Anti-Rightist Movement
- Great Leap Forward
- Cultural Revolution
Inquiry Question(s):
To what extent have these reforms contributed to China's success today? Of the above, which reform held the most significance?
